Paul Ekman Biography

Paul Ekman is the Manager of the Paul Ekman Group, LLC (PEG), a small firm that develops emotional skills training devices and is launching new research in the areas of national security and law enforcement. In 1954, he began researching face expression and bodily movement, which became the topic of his Master's thesis in 1955 and his first publication in 1957. His approach to nonverbal conduct in his early work revealed his personality training. Over the next decade, his work became more social-psychological, and cross-cultural, with an increasing focus on evolutionary and semiotic frames of reference. He has spent the last thirty years researching deception in addition to his basic studies on emotion and its presentation. The National Institute of Mental Health awarded him a Research Scientist Award in 1971, which he earned again in 1976, 1981, 1987, 1991, and 1997. For more than four decades, the National Institute of Mental Health has funded his study through fellowships, grants, and prizes. Time Magazine, Smithsonian Magazine, Psychology Today, The New Yorker, and other American and international publications have published articles about Dr. Ekman's work. The New York Times, Washington Post, and other major publications have all published pieces about his work. He's been on shows including 48 Hours, Dateline, Good Morning America, 20/20, Larry King, Oprah, and Johnny Carson, among others. He's also been on a number of public television shows.
