So I got a $12,000-a-year ticket sales position with the San Bernardino Stampede, a minor-league baseball team, and then went to the San Diego Padres. After a year, I realized there was no way I could grow, so I returned to the Bay Area. I tried to create a leisure sports league before responding to an ad for Autoweb, an online car-buying firm whose founder and CEO were only a year my senior. Everyone was ecstatic about the Internet in 1997. With the objective of learning how to start something yourself, I volunteered to help with anything that people didn't want to do. I quit after 11 months to create 4Students.com, a student site where you could e-mail other students and obtain shopping discounts. Studentadvantage.com wanted to hire me and redesign the site under their name, but I realized that being a student wasn't for me, so I just shut it down.
