Since his performance in Mike Nichols' The Birdcage catapulted him into stardom in 1996 Nathan has appeared in one memorable role after another. His portrayal of Max Bialystock in the long-running Broadway phenomenon The Producers won him the Drama Desk Outer Critics Circle and Tony Awards for Best Actor in a Musical. For his London appearances in the same role he was honored with the Olivier Award. Nathan has also been wildly acclaimed for his appearances in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (for which he picked up his first Tony) Terence McNally's Love! Valour! Compassion! and Guys and Dolls; as well for his voiceover work in The Lion King Stuart Little and Mousehunt. In 2006 he wrote the libretto and starred in Stephen Sondheim's hit adaptation of Aristophanes' The Frogs.
