Nathan J. Brown Biography

Nathan J. Brown is a prominent academic and the author of six well-received books on Arab politics. He is a professor of political science and international affairs at George Washington University. Brown contributes to the Endowment his knowledge in Islamist movements, Palestinian politics, and Arab law and constitutionalism. When Victory Is Not an Option: Islamist Movements in Arab Politics, Brown's most recent book, was released by Cornell University Press in early 2012. His current research focuses on Islamist groups and their significance in Arab politics. Brown was appointed a Carnegie Scholar by the Carnegie Corporation of New York in 2009, and he is a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars for the 2009–2010 academic year. Brown has participated in Human Rights Watch advisory groups as well as committees writing the Palestinian and Iraqi constitutions, in addition to his academic work. He has also worked as a consultant for the US Agency for International Development, the United Nations Development Program, and a number of non-governmental organizations. Resuming Arab Palestine (University of California Press, 2003); Constitutions in a Non-Constitutional World: Arab Basic Laws and Prospects for Accountable Government (SUNY Press, 2001); The Arab World's Rule of Law: Courts in Egypt and the Gulf Arab States (Cambridge University Press, 1997).
