Nasir Jones, known professionally as Nas, is a prominent American rapper, lyricist, record producer, and actor. Born to a jazz musician father, Olu Dara, Nas has maintained a successful music career since 1994, having released eight consecutive platinum and multi-platinum albums and selling over 25 million records globally. He is also a savvy entrepreneur, running his record label, serving as an associate publisher of Mass Appeal magazine, and owning a Fila sneaker store. Currently signed to Def Jam Recordings and Mass Appeal Records, Nas rose to prominence in 1991 after being featured on Main Source's track "Live at the Barbeque." His debut album "Illmatic," released in 1994, received widespread praise from both the music community and critics. He is frequently considered one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. His follow-up album "It Was Written" was released in 1996, reaching number one on the Billboard charts and making him an internationally known artist. His eleventh studio album, "Life Is Good," was released in 2012 and was nominated for the Best Rap Album award at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards. Nas is widely recognized as one of the greatest hip-hop artists of all time, with MTV ranking him at number 5 on their list of The Greatest MCs of All Time and The Source ranking him at number 2 on their list of the Top 50 Lyricists of All Time. In addition, he has received numerous accolades, including being named number one on About.com's list of the 50 Greatest MCs of All Time and fourth on MTV's Hottest MCs in the Game list. With five number-one albums on the Billboard 200, Nas ties with Eminem and Kanye West for second place among the all-time greatest rappers.
