Mike Pazin Biography

In 2011, Dr. Pazin joined the NHGRI's Extramural Research Program at the National Human Genome Research Institute. Mike is a member of the NHGRI team in charge of the ENCODE project, which aims to create an Encyclopedia of DNA Elements from the human genome, and the modENCODE project, which aims to uncover functional elements in the genomes of insects and worms. He is in charge of a functional genomics grant portfolio. He is also a member of the National Human Genome Research Institute's Data Access Committee. Prior to joining NHGRI, Dr. Pazin worked as a lead investigator at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School and the National Institute on Aging, where he studied the function of chromatin remodeling in gene regulation. T helper cells and neurons were used as model systems in this study, which included cell-free (biochemical) and cell-based (single-gene and genomic) experiments. He graduated from MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with a B.S. in chemistry, a Ph.D. in cell biology from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and a postdoctoral study at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).
