Mike Johanns Biography

Mike Johanns has worked in both the legislative and executive branches of government for more than 30 years. Sen. Johanns was elected to the United States Senate in 2008 and spent one term on the Appropriations, Agriculture, Banking, Commerce, Environment & Public Works, Indian Affairs, and Veterans' Affairs committees (varied by Congress). Sen. Johanns, the 28th Secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture, oversaw 18 departments with 90,000 employees worldwide and a $93 billion budget. As a member of the US negotiation team for the Doha Development Round, he established or extended access to 40 international markets and achieved agricultural successes. He made 32 overseas travels to promote trade, assistance, and food safety, as well as serve as a spokesperson of the US President. Sen. Johanns advocated for the expansion of the renewable fuels sector and cooperative conservation on a national level. He led the country through crises such as avian flu, BSE, tuberculosis, and drought. The formulation of a comprehensive farm bill plan based on 50 countrywide hearing meetings, half of which he personally hosted, was an unparalleled feat. His idea laid the groundwork for the 2008 agricultural bill's upgrades and changes. From 1999 to 2005, Senator Johanns served as Governor of Nebraska, managing a $2.6 billion state budget while reducing property taxes. He was successful in reforming the state's archaic mental health system, as well as advocating for changes to the state's child protection system. He enhanced economic development initiatives and developed value-added agriculture. As Governor, Senator Johanns conducted seven trade trips to eight different nations. He was a member of the National Governors Association Executive Committee, head of the Governors' Biotechnology Partnership, and chair of the 25-state Governors' Ethanol Coalition, as well as a state representative on the Export-Import Bank Advisory Committee. Sen. Johanns began his public service on the Lancaster County Board of Commissioners in Nebraska, then on the Lincoln City Council. In 1991, he was elected Mayor of Lincoln, and in 1995, he was re-elected without competition. He possesses a law degree from Creighton University in Omaha and a bachelor's degree from St. Mary's University in Minnesota. Before practicing law in O'Neill and Lincoln, Nebraska, he clerked for the Nebraska Supreme Court. Senator Johanns is a member of the Deere & Company and Burlington Capital Group boards of directors. He is a member of the OSI Group's Board of Managers and the QDChip Advisory Board.
