In 2015, Dr. Carter was honored with the Chapel of Four Chaplains Bronze Medallion, a distinction that is annually bestowed upon no more than six individuals throughout the world. Michelle also received the Florida Elks 2015 Humanitarian of the Year award and the Council on Aging Glenn and Connie Ritchey Community Service Award. January 2010, Mrs. Carter and her son, Vince Carter, opened Vince Carter’s, a restaurant in Daytona Beach, FL. On behalf of their efforts, Volusia County proclaimed Sunday, January 10, 2010 as Vince Carter and Michelle Carter-Scott Day, recognizing them for their investment in the community.

Mrs. Carter’s philanthropic endeavors include being a major contributor to the Bethune-Cookman University proposed football facility, the girls’ softball team and performing arts center, the community outreach of St. James Episcopal Church, Mainland High School Boys’ Basketball Teams, PACE Center for Girls of Volusia/Flagler County, and the Stewart-Marchman-Act Foundation. In addition, as a major contributor to the Stewart-Marchman-Act Foundation’s Vince Carter Sanctuary, the main building is named in her honor, the Michelle Carter-Scott Community Center.

In memory of her grandmother, Mrs. Carter instituted the Annie B. Westbrook Scholarship Fund. In honor of her granddaughter, she established Kai’s Kloset to offer clothing to children in need and to instill in her granddaughter the importance of charitable giving. In collaboration with the former president of Bethune-Cookman University, Dr. Edison O. Jackson, and his cabinet, Dr. Carter developed the Bethune-Cookman University/Embassy of Hope Community Scholars Scholarship in 2013.

Through her dedication and leadership, Dr. Carter has overseen the involvement of the Vince Carter Embassy of Hope Foundation by providing food to needy families and financial support of the humanitarian efforts of the Children’s Home Society, Halifax Urban Ministries, Anchor House Ministries, Wings of Hope Foundation, Dream-A-Wish, Habitat for Humanity, Family Renew Community, to name just a few. These types of contributions have totaled over 2.1 million dollars in Volusia County, parts of the United States and Canada.

In 2018, the New Journal’s “Women in Business” award was earned by Dr. Carter for her outstanding leadership and being an influential woman in the non-profit category within Volusia and Flagler Counties.

In 2019, Dr. Carter provided over 800 items of clothing to a Malawi (East Africa) community of destitute tobacco workers and their children. The priest of St. Peter’s Anglican Church will help develop a youth basketball program where the children will wear shirts from this donation as their uniforms. She also assisted a family displaced by Hurricane Katrina, assisted in the efforts to bring boys and girls basketball to Volusia County middle schools, and involved herself with the realization of the Vince Carter Athletic Center on the campus of Mainland High School. Most importantly, Dr. Carter constantly reaches out and helps students and families seeking assistance. The last thing she looks for is recognition because she believes strongly in the power of community and giving to those who are less fortunate than she.

Michelle Carter is a devoted member of St. James Episcopal Church. She is also an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Dr. Carter has two children, Vince and Chris, two bonus children, Alicia and Jeff, and three grandchildren, Kai Michelle Carter, Vincent Lamar Carter, Jr., and Vayle Elizabeth Carter.
