Michael Rooker Biography

In 1955, Michael Rooker was born in Jasper, Alabama. His parents divorced and he moved with his mother to Chicago at age 13. While attending college, he became interested in acting and started off on local stage productions. On his first break into film, Rooker’s personality and good looks were used to his advantage as he played the titled character Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, filmed in 1986 and wasn’t released until 1990 due to its controversial nature. He has spent most of his acting career playing villains, brutes, and psychopaths, since that unforgettable performance. He occasionally acts as a “good guy”, for a talented actor like him who is often typecast. The role of Merle Dixon in AMC’s hit series, The Walking Dead, earned him a large and loyal fanbase worldwide. Shortly after filming Season 3, he added his voice talents to Activision’s video game, The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct. In addition to the number of films and television roles he has played, Rooker has voiced many popular video games, including Mike Harper in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and the villain Vikke in Lollipop Chainsaw. In Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, directed by long-time friend/partner in crime, James Gunn, Rooker was cast as Yondu; and also featured in the sequel of Guardians of the Galaxy.
