Michael Kneeland Biography

In 2008, Michael Kneeland was named president and CEO of United Rentals, as well as a director of the firm. Since 2007, he had served as a temporary chief executive officer. After United Rentals acquired an Equipment Supply Firm in 1998, Mr. Kneeland joined the company as a district manager. In 1999, his duties within United Rentals' aerial operations were expanded to span various districts. In 2000, he was promoted to vice president of aerial operations, then vice president of the southeast region in 2001, before being promoted to executive vice president of operations in 2003. During his more than 33 years in the equipment rental sector, he has held important sales and operational positions with private, public, and investor-owned enterprises, including Freestate Industries, Inc. Mr. Kneeland was president of Freestate from 1995 until 1996 when the firm was sold to Equipment Supply Company. He was the general manager of Rylan Rents d/b/a Freestate Industries, a branch of Equipment Supply, from 1996 to 1998. Equipment Supply was the largest aerial equipment rental firm in North America when it was purchased by United Rentals. Mr. Kneeland was named Chairman of the Compensation Committee on the board of directors of YRC Worldwide, Inc., a leading supplier of transportation and worldwide logistics services, in 2011. He was named Co-Chair of the Transportation Stakeholder Alliance in 2015.
