Over 25 years working mostly as a journalist in Perth, London, Bangkok, Jakarta, Buenos Aires and New York, I've acquired an eclectic, internationalist set of interests. Most recently, they've coalesced around studying the social and economic phenomena unleashed by digital technology and globalization.

When I recognized the social benefits promised by the blockchain technology that underpins bitcoin, I decided I wanted to be a part of the movement to bring it to practical implementation.

So, having closed the curtain on 18 years at The Wall Street Journal,where I mostly covered global economic and financial trends and was recently a senior columnist, my new home is the nascentDigital Currency Initiative at MIT Media Lab. There, our team is working on blockchain-based solutions for everything from financial inclusion and welfare payments to voting and identity.
