Melvin L. Watt Biography

He was a Phi Beta Kappa alumnus of the University of North Carolina with a BS degree in Business Administration. He was born on August 26, 1945, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He graduated from Yale University Law School in 1970 with a JD and was a published member of the Yale Law Journal. Mel worked at a general practice legal firm from 1970 until 1992, focusing on minority business and economic development law. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1992 after serving in the North Carolina Senate from 1985 to 1986. Mel was a member of the House Financial Services Committee's Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Government Sponsored Enterprises and Financial Institutions, and Consumer Credit. Mel was confirmed as the director of the FHFA by the Senate in December 2013. Mel is married to schoolteacher Eulada Paysour Watt. They have two sons, Brian and Jason, both of whom are Yale University graduates with advanced degrees.
