Max Weinberg Biography

Max Weinberg is a drummer and television personality best known for his work with Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band and as the bandleader for Conan O'Brien on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien. Weinberg was born and raised in suburban New Jersey, where he learned drumming at a young age. He went to college intending to become a lawyer, but he got his big break in music in 1974 when he won an audition to be Springsteen's drummer. Weinberg became a fixture of Springsteen's extended concert performances after his strong but controlled playing on albums like Born to Run and Born in the U.S.A. solidified the E Street Band sound. After Springsteen disbanded the band in 1989, Weinberg contemplated a legal career and dabbled in the business side of the music industry for a few years before opting to stick with drumming. Weinberg was cast as the bandleader of The Max Weinberg 7 for Late Night with Conan O'Brien in 1993. Weinberg's drum-driven jump blues style and position as a comedic foil grew in popularity with the program, allowing him to pursue a second career. Springsteen reassembled the E Street Band for a series of concerts and recordings in 1999, and Weinberg worked out a deal that permitted him to perform with both O'Brien and Springsteen at the same time. Weinberg joined Conan O'Brien's Tonight Show in 2009 as the leader of Max Weinberg and The Tonight Show Band. After it ended, he created and performed with the Max Weinberg Big Band, and in 2010 he declined to join Conan O'Brien's new program.
