Matti Friedman, a writer and regular contributor to the New York Times Op-Ed Section, has previously published two nonfiction books. Pumpkin flowers: A Soldier's Story of a Forgotten War, which he published in 2016, was named a New York Times Notable Book and one of Amazon's top ten books of the year. Booklist, Mother Jones, Foreign Affairs, the National Post, and The Globe and Mail all named Pumpkinflowers as one of the finest books of the year. It was nominated for the 2017 RBC Taylor Prize, the Writer's Trust Prize, and the Yitzhak Sadeh Prize for military writing, and won the 2017 Vine Award for Canadian Jewish literature and the Canadian Jewish Literary Award for memoir. The book was released in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Israel, and China. Matti's debut book, The Aleppo Codex, was awarded the 2014 Sami Rohr Prize, the ALA's Sophie Brody Medal, and the Canadian Jewish Book Award for history for his study into the unusual fate of an ancient Bible text. It's been translated into seven other languages. The narrative of Israel's first intelligence operatives in 1948, Spies of No Country, has won the 2018 Natan Book Award. Matti worked as a reporter for the Associated Press in Israel, Lebanon, Morocco, Moscow, the Caucasus, and Washington, DC, and his work has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Tablet Magazine, and other publications. Two pieces he published for Tablet and The Atlantic criticizing media coverage of Israel following the 2014 Gaza war sparked heated debate and were shared over 130,000 times on Facebook. He was born in Toronto and now lives with his family in Jerusalem.
