Matthew Marshall Biography

Matt Marshall started VentureBeat in 2006 and serves as its editor and CEO. From 2001 to 2006, he handled Mercury News' venture capital and startup beat. During that period, Marshall greatly extended the newspaper's coverage of venture capital and startups, first with daily stories and a weekly column called the VC Insider, and later with his blog SiliconBeat, which he launched in 2004. Marshall received the Northern California Society of Professional Journalists' Journalist of the Year award in 2002, as well as the James Madison Freedom of Information Award in 2003. These honors were given to Marshall for a series of stories he authored in conjunction with two successful Mercury News lawsuits against California's public pension system (CalPERS) and the University of California, both of which he was a part of. The lawsuits argued that state taxpayers and retirees had a right to know about the financial performance of venture capital and other private equity groups in which CalPERS and UC had invested. Public employees now have full access to information on the performance of their retirement assets as a result of these court cases. From 1995 until 1998, Marshall worked as a correspondent for the Wall Street Journal in Bonn, Germany. While in Germany, he published The Bank: the Birth of Europe's Central Bank and the Rebirth of European Power in 1999. He's also contributed to the Washington Post and other media. Marshal also serves as DEMO's executive producer. Marshall graduated from Georgetown University with a Ph.D. in Government and an MA in German and European Studies.
