Matt Haggman Biography

Matt Haggman is the Miami Program Director at the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. In this role, Haggman leads Knight’s communities program in South Florida. He joined Knight in September 2011.

Haggman is an award-winning journalist who previously worked for nearly a decade reporting on issues of local and national importance. He initially covered legal affairs for the Daily Business Review in Miami, which included reporting from Cuba on U.S. lawyers working on the island and authoring a series of stories highlighting flaws in touchscreen voting machines in Florida, which were later scrapped by state election officials.

Haggman then moved to The Miami Herald, where he covered the real estate industry during an historic building boom. He then worked as an investigative reporter, co-authoring a multipart series detailing how state regulators looked the other away as Florida became the country’s most mortgage fraud-ridden state. In the wake of the series, Florida’s top banking regulator was replaced and a host of consumer protection reforms were passed in the Florida Legislature.

Haggman won numerous awards for his work, including the Gerald Loeb award, the highest honor in business journalism. In each of his last two years at The Miami Herald, he won the President’s Award, which honors the best work in the McClatchy newspaper chain. In his last full year as a journalist, the Miami New Times named Haggman in its annual “Best of Miami” awards as the Best Miami Herald Reporter.
