About Mary Lambert
Mary Lambert Biography
Mary Lambert is good at two things; crying and singing. Nowhere is this better reflected than on her debut EP Letters Don’t Talk. The collection of songs, released in 2012, established Mary as a formidable Seattle artist and caught the attention of local hip-hop duo, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, with whom she wrote and sang the same-sex rights anthem “Same Love.”
Lambert wrote every song on her first two extended plays, Letters Don't Talk and Welcome To the Age of My Body. Lambert's songwriting style has often been compared to Adele, Tori Amos, Bon Iver, and James Blake. Lambert stated in a Huffington Post interview that her music and poetry contain "A lot of darkness, and sadness and grief." Lambert primarily writes about her early childhood traumas, sexual abuse, body image, bipolar disorder, and her sexuality. The "Same Love" chorus draws on Lambert's experiences as a lesbian growing up in a tumultuous, Christian upbringing. The repeating line, "Not crying on Sundays," for example, echoes the way she felt after leaving Sunday services in the Evangelical church. Lambert wrote the chorus's hook in two hours. "Body Love" and "Sarasvati" both feature Lambert using a talk-rhythm singing style.
When asked why she wrote the chorus for "Same Love", Lambert said that she wanted to write a song that was "genuine and authentic to my experience.
The revolutionary single has allowed Lambert’s voice to reach millions. She has toured nationally and performed live on The "MTV Video Music Awards," "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," VH1 and The Colbert Report. “Same Love” has sold over two million copies in the US alone, peaking at No. 11 on The Billboard Hot 100. She recently released her newest single, “She Keeps Me Warm.” The music video for the song received over one million views in its first week.
Her album Welcome to the Age of My Body" was released in February 2014. She toured with Gavin DeGraw and Matt Nathanson after the release of the record.
Lambert graduated from Cornish College of the Arts with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Composition. She is also an award winning spoken-word artist. She published her debut book of poetry, "500 Tips for Fat Girls," in January of 2013.
