Martin Scorsese is an American-Italian filmmaker and historian. Much of his work addresses themes of Italian-American identity Roman Catholic concepts of guilt and gang-related conflict. Many of his films are known for their heavy use of violence and profanity. Scorsese was born on November 17 1942 in Flushing NY. As a child he suffered from severe asthma and as a result was blocked from participating in sports and other common childhood activities. Consequently Scorsese sought refuge in area movie houses quickly becoming obsessed with the cinema in particular the work of Michael Powell. He has directed works such as the crime Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, the religious epic drama The Last Temptation of Christ, the crime film Goodfellas and many more. He collaborated on many films with actor and close friend Robert De Niro. Scorsese has also been noted for his successful collaborations with actor Leonardo DiCaprio having directed him in five films beginning with Gangs of New York and most recently The Wolf of Wall Street in 2013."
