About Martha Reeves
Martha Reeves Biography
Martha's mother has been both an inspiration and a teacher to her. Ruby and Elijah sing and play the guitar purely for the enjoyment of the family. She was raised on the east side and attended Russell Elementary School, where Mrs. Emily Wagstaff taught her singing. She studied voice at Northeastern High School under the tutelage of Abraham Silver, who also trained future Motown singers Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson of the Supremes, as well as Bobby Rogers of the Miracles. Shortly after graduating from high school, Reeves began working as a secretary at Motown Records in Detroit, Michigan. Martha was occasionally permitted to sing lyrics into demo recordings to help Motown's performers learn new songs, and when one of the company's usual studio backup singers became ill and couldn't participate in a recording session, Martha was allowed to fill in. It was just a matter of time before I was hired as a regular Motown backing vocalist. Reeves offered her abilities to the songs of Marvin Gaye and other Motown proteges with the help of Rosalind Ashford and Annette Sterling, with whom she had attended high school. By 1963, Motown officials believed that Reeves, Ashford, and Sterling have enough potential to establish their own group, especially with Reeves' powerful lead vocals. The ladies were signed to the Gordy label, which is a Motown subsidiary, and released the smash tune Come and Get These Memories soon. Heat Wave, an even larger hit, came shortly after. Reeves told Ebony that she sang because it made her happy and helped her to support her family, even though she hadn't set out to achieve such fame. It enabled me to progress from a slum kid to someone who could pay her expenses. Sterling left the Vandellas after Heat Wave and was replaced by Betty Kelly. The trio's hit-making potential was unaffected by the personnel change; with Dancing in the Street in 1964, Martha and the Vandellas continued to trademark the rougher, more boisterous rhythm and blues sound that set them apart from the Supremes and other Motown female groups. The infectious beat of Dancing in the Street was partially generated by one of the producers beating on the floor with some snow chains from a vehicle, according to Geoffrey Stokes in Rock of Ages: The Rolling Stone History of Rock and Roll. Nowhere to Run, I'm Ready for Love, and Honey Chile were all hits for Martha Reeves and the Vandellas in the late 1960s. In 1968, Kelly was replaced by Reeves' sister Lois, but sickness forced Reeves to leave the show the following year. Martha and Lois Reeves, as well as another lady named Sandra Tilley, revived the group in 1970. Though the Vandellas had a few modest singles on the rhythm and blues charts in the early 1970s, they were unable to equal Reeves' earlier success. Martha got her Motown release and disbanded the Vandellas in 1972. After twelve years in Los Angeles, Martha now lives in Detroit with her son Eric, where it all began. She's had solo recordings in between her live appearances all over the world since Motown Records. The first one was released in 1973 on MCA Records by Planet Records' Richard Perry. Arista published the album The Rest of My Life, which included a variety of producers. We Meet Again was published by Fantasy Records in 1979, followed by Gotta's Keep Moving in 1981. Martha Reeves is still touring the United Kingdom and the United States with other Motown artists. She remarked of one of these outings, "It was amazing." I'm happy that after all these years, we can still generate high-quality sound and recall everything we've learned - the things that keep us going. She doesn't appear to require backup vocalists any longer. People in the audience are suddenly the Vandellas since everyone knows the song.
