On November 12, 2012, Mark Thompson was named president and chief executive officer of The New York Times Company. He is in charge of the organization's strategy, operations, and business units. Mr. Thompson has played a key role in hastening The New York Times's digital transformation. The Times became the first news institution in the world to reach one million digital-only subscriptions under his leadership. In addition, the firm has ushered in a new age of global expansion, launching an industry-leading branded content studio and investing in virtual reality, generating some of the most acclaimed work in this developing medium. Mr. Thompson served as director-general of the BBC from 2004 to 2008, reshaping the institution to meet the challenges of the digital age and ensuring that it remained a leading innovation with the development of services such as the BBC iPlayer. He also managed the BBC's transformation, boosting productivity and efficiency by using new technology and reorganizing the business. Mr. Thompson began his career at the BBC as a production trainee in 1979. He helped create "Watchdog" and "Breakfast Time," worked as an output editor on "Newsnight," and was named editor of "Nine O'Clock News" and "Panorama" in 1988 and 1990, respectively. Before leaving the BBC in 2002 to become the C.E.O. of Channel 4 Television Corporation in the United Kingdom, he worked as a controller (programming and scheduling head) for the TV network BBC2 and as a director of television for the BBC. He was a visiting professor of rhetoric and the art of public persuasion at the University of Oxford in the autumn of 2012. In September 2016, his book “Enough Said: What's Wrong with the Language of Politics?” was released in the United Kingdom and the United States, based on lectures he presented at Oxford. Mark Thompson attended Oxford's Merton College and Stonyhurst College.
