Mark Orlowski Biography

Mark Orlowski is a Marketplace.org and Marketplace Morning Report contributor. Since 2005, his daily work as the founder and executive director of the nonprofit Sustainable Endowments Institute has taken him to 35 different states throughout the United States. Since the late 1990s, he has obsessively accumulated and redeemed frequent flyer miles and hotel points. Mark received his private pilot's certificate in 2002 and is frustrated that he cannot earn miles while flying. The Sustainable Endowments Institute (SEI) has pioneered climate-resilient institutional solutions via research, teaching, and outreach. Mark is in charge of the Institute's research on college sustainability programs, which includes the development of the College Sustainability Report Card. Mark is also the creator and administrator of the Billion Dollar Green Challenge, a program that encourages schools and other nonprofit organizations to invest a total of $1 billion in energy efficiency renovations. Mark has lectured at over 80 universities in over 30 states since the Institute was founded as a special initiative of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors in 2005. Numerous accounts of his work have appeared in the national and corporate press, in addition to extensive attention by university publications. CNN Money, Forbes, The New York Times, and BusinessWeek have all published pieces about the company. Mr. Orlowski is familiar with endowment trustees' fiduciary obligations as a member of the board of managers managing investments for New England Quaker Meetings. He also sits on the board of Proxy Democracy, a non-profit committed to making proxy information more accessible. Mr. Orlowski, a Williams College alumnus, headed the college's Campus Environmental Advisory Committee and served on its Advisory Committee on Shareholder Responsibility. He also obtained an associate's degree from Berkshire Community College and a master's degree in nonprofit administration from Harvard University.
