Marcia Fudge Biography

Party member and an American attorney and politician who has held various political positions over the years. Currently, she serves as the 18th United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, a position she has held since 2021. Before she was appointed the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Fudge represented Ohio's 11th congressional district in the US House of Representatives from 2008 to 2021. The district encompasses a large number of black-majority precincts located between Cleveland and Akron. Following the demise of Stephanie Tubbs Jones in 2008, Fudge ran unopposed in the special election that was held to replace her. During the 113th Congress, Fudge chaired the Congressional Black Caucus. She even considered running for Speaker of the United States House of Representatives at the start of the 116th Congress, but ultimately announced her support for Nancy Pelosi. On December 10, 2020, President-elect Joe Biden nominated Fudge as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. The U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs approved her nomination by a vote of 17–7 on February 4, 2021. The United States Senate later confirmed her nomination on March 10, 2021, by a vote of 66–34. She was virtually sworn in by Vice President Kamala Harris on the same day she was confirmed, making her the second African-American woman to ever serve as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.
