Magnus Carlsen was born on November 20, 1990, in Tnsberg, Norway. At the age of five, he began to play chess with his father. The game quickly became his greatest love. Magnus' initial objective was to defeat his sister, followed by his father, and it didn't end there. Magnus was the youngest International Grandmaster at the time, at the age of 13. He became the fifth chess player in history to earn an Elo-rating of over 2800 in October 2009, at the Nanjing Pearl Spring tournament, and by far the youngest to do so. In the same year, he won the World Blitz Chess Championship. Magnus became the youngest ever chess player to be ranked World No. 1 when the new FIDE list was announced in January 2010, at the age of 19. He has been the world's highest-rated chess player since July 2011. Magnus beat Garry Kasparov's record by ten points in January 2013, earning the highest rating ever with 2,862. He improved his personal record by ten points, resulting in a current rating of 2,872. Magnus Carlsen was crowned World Chess Champion in November 2013 in Chennai, India, after defeating Viswanathan Anand 6,5-3,5. Magnus won games 5, 6, and 9 before securing the title with a tense tie in game 10.
