Madeline Mitchell is a Russellville, Alabama-based beauty queen. She was crowned Miss Alabama USA 2011 and went on to compete in the Miss USA 2011 pageant, where she placed second runner-up. She won Miss Alabama USA two years after recovering from a 12-day coma and multiple broken bones sustained in a 2008 automobile accident. She hit a deer and lost control of her vehicle on September 26, 2008, while on her way to show her mother her new outfit for the 2008 Miss Alabama USA competition. Just off Alabama State Route 13, the vehicle crashed into a 40-foot gully and caught fire. Gary Lewellen, a Walmart truck driver, stopped off the road and put out the fire in her car, saving her life. Following the event, she spent 12 days in a coma at the University of Alabama Hospital with severe leg fractures, fractured ribs, and internal injuries. She was on a respirator for 21 days and in a wheelchair for two months. She was in danger of losing not just her leg, but her life, due to a shattered femur in 12 places and pneumonia. Despite physicians' reservations, she was able to walk again after many months. She has crowned Miss Alabama USA on November 7, 2010, as Miss Tuscaloosa. Mitchell became second runner-up in the Miss USA 2011 pageant in Las Vegas in June 2011.
