About Lilia Luciano
Lilia Luciano Biography
Lilia Luciano is an accomplished journalist, documentary film producer and literacy advocate. She currently blogs for the Huffington Post and is working on a documentary series titled “Wars of Others,” exposing the consequences that the international Drug Wars have had on Colombian society. Lilia also works closely with Girl Up!, the UN Foundation’s initiative to promote access to quality education for girls worldwide.
Over the course of her career, Lilia has covered a variety of breaking news, economy and human interest stories. In March 2013, she received a GLAAD award for her work exploring homophobia and “tolerancia” in Latino cultures.
As a national NBC News correspondent, reporting in both English and Spanish, Lilia lead coverage of a number of high-profile murder cases including the six week-long court proceedings against Casey Anthony, the trial against University of Virginia Lacrosse captain George Huguely and the first degree murder trial against Joran Van der Sloot in Lima, Peru. Luciano also notably covered the path and devastation of Hurricane Irene from when it first touched land in the Bahamas all the way through North Carolina, reporting for NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams, The Today Show, The Weather Channel, MSNBC, CNBC and Telemundo.
A member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Lilia served as a consultant and contributor for NBC News's NBC Latino, an online platform catering to English-speaking Hispanics in America. Prior to NBC, Lilia spent five and a half years as a correspondent and co-anchor for Univision Networks. In 2009 Luciano reported for the network's News Magazine Aqui y Ahora and joined Univision's FIFA World Cup 2010 talent lineup throughout the summer games in South Africa. While there reporting on human interest and culture stories, she produced her second documentary, Pikinini's. The story followed one South African woman’s efforts to educate the youngest members of her impoverished community, shedding light on the values of early education. Before Pikinini’s, Lilia produced another short documentary, Nueva Orleans, which focused on the struggles of the growing Hispanic community in New Orleans after Katrina.
Having seen firsthand and reported on the importance and profound effects of quality education, Luciano has become a passionate advocate. Prior to her work with Girl Up!, she had launched her own literacy and education campaign aimed at young Hispanics: Aprende Más! and served as a spokesperson for The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Univision’s joint education campaign, Es El Momento. Other organizations with which she has participated include St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and Walk Now for Autism.
Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Luciano graduated from the University of Miami with degrees in Economics and Broadcast Journalism. She previously attended Tufts University until 2003, when she made her transition from pre-med studies to journalism. She currently lives in Miami, FL.
