Lewis Gordon Pugh enjoys creating new swimming routes around or between locations that were previously considered to be impassable. In 2006, he swam the drought-stricken Thames and became the first swimmer to complete a long-distance swim in each of the world's five seas. The following year, he completed the first long-distance swim across the North Pole, where the ice had temporarily vanished due to climate change. He is widely considered as the finest cold-water swimmer in history as he enters the second decade of his career. His swims have provided him with a birds-ey perspective of our world, inspiring him to do his part to help protect it. He abandoned a profession in marine law to work with his group, Polar Defence Project, as a public speaker on environmental problems — and, of course, to arrange more incredible swims and treks. Pugh and Robbie Hedges kayaked across the Arctic Ocean into the polar ice pack in September 2008 to raise awareness of the Arctic's decreasing sea ice and the hazards of climate change there and throughout the world. He also swam 1 kilometer across Pumori, a meltwater lake near to the Khumbu Glacier on Mount Everest, at an altitude of 5300 meters, to raise attention to the melting of Asian glaciers towards the end of May 2010. In less than 23 minutes, he finished the swim, which is the highest any individual has ever attempted. Glaciers are more than simply ice; they are a lifeline, providing water to 2 billion people, and they must be protected, according to him.
