About Leslie A. Perlow
Leslie A. Perlow Biography
Leslie Perlow is an expert on how work practices affect the quality of both our personal lives and our corporate productivity and how work practice changes can release the productive potential of individuals and organizations. As a corporate ethnographer an anthropologist of corporate culture Leslie studies how we really do our work, the ways in which people interact in the process of doing their work and how these interactions affect organizational performance. Leslie is an award-winning teacher with a gift for connecting with audiences through stories and a winning personal presence. Leslie is a professor of Leadership and Organizational Behavior at Harvard Business School and the author of When You Say Yes But Mean No: How Silencing Conflict Wrecks Relationships and Companies . . . And What You Can Do About It.
In When You Say Yes, Dr. Perlow explains how patterns of silencing conflict can paralyze people, destroy relationships, stifle creativity, and lead to poor decisions, all at a high cost to the organization. She describes how the increasing pace of business feeds these patterns and how companies have successfully freed people to be more productive through effective leadership.
Leslies method combines close personal observation with analysis that uncovers the obstacles to effective work and the opportunities for restructuring work life in ways that benefit both workers and the work. She illustrates her points with a repertoire of cases and stories drawn from this field work. Her approach gives audiences invaluable insights into their operations and relationships and solutions that deal directly with how things really work in their organization.
In her previous book, Finding Time: How Corporations, Individuals, and Families Can Benefit from New Work Practices, she provides guidelines for restructuring those work practices that hurt performance by driving productivity down and driving personal anxieties up. In her current research, she studies the common theme of both books: the relationship between work processes, personal behavior and productivity.
Leslie spent five years at the University of Michigans Center for the Ethnography of Everyday Life before coming to the Harvard Business School. Professor Perlow received her B.A. in Economics from Princeton University and her Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from MIT. Before attending graduate school she worked as a management consultant.
