Leland Melvin was born on February 15 1964 in Lynchburg Virginia. From an early age, he had his interests; he wanted to be in sports and in science, played football and did well in school. He attended the University of Richmond, where he received his degree in chemistry and was also a wide receiver for the university's football team. Leland entered into the professional arena, after the college, he was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1986 and later played for Dallas Cowboys. But a career ending injury made him to shift to science and engineering. Leland received his master's degree in materials science engineering from the University of Virginia and joined NASA in 1989 as a research engineer. Twenty five years ago, he was selected as a NASA astronaut, and he flew two Space Shuttle missions, STS-122 and STS-129, helping to finish the International Space Station. Along with his NASA career, Leland has made his mark as an advocate of STEM education and of diversity in science and engineering. His memoir “Chasing Space” is his story of an ordinary man’s extraordinary journey and has encouraged others to reach for their dreams.
