Laurence Tribe Biography

Born in China to Russian Jewish parents, Laurence H. Tribe, since 1968 has taught at Harvard’s Law School as a Professor of Constitutional Law at Harvard and the graduating class of 2000 voted him the best professor. Harvard’s highest academic honor awarded to 68 professors in all of Harvard University’s history is the title “University Professor.” He is also a Carl M. Loeb University Professor. In 1958, at age 16, Tribe enrolled at Harvard University and graduated magna cum laude in Law (1966) and summa cum laude in Mathematics (1962). From 1966 to 1968, he clerked for the California and U.S. Supreme Courts and at 30, he received tenure. At 38, he was elected into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 2010, he was also elected into the American Philosophical Society. He assisted in creating the constitutions of the Marshall Islands, South Africa, the Czech Republic and received eleven honorary degrees. In March 2011, he received a degree honoris causa from the Government of Mexico which has never been awarded to an American and was also awarded an honorary D. Litt. from Columbia University. Out of the many appellate cases he has argued including 35 in the U.S. Supreme Court, he succeeded in three-fifths of these cases. President Obama appointed him as the Attorney General Holder to serve as the first Senior Counselor for Access to Justice in 2010. He wrote an essay on American Constitutional Law which has been cited more times than any other legal text since 1950 and published 115 books and articles.
