Laura Marling was just 16 years old when she burst into the British indie scene in 2007, owing to a slew of catchy tracks made available on her MySpace page. With a gravelly voice, an acoustic guitar, and a knack for writing quirky, catchy folk songs (characteristics that have her compared favorably to Lily Allen, Regina Spektor, and Martha Wainwright), Marling speedily established a reputation for herself in England thanks to a busy touring schedule and a few high-profile appearances, including a performance at the 2006 City of London Festival. Her debut EP, My Manic and I, was set for independent release in the late fall of 2007, despite the fact that she was still without a label a year later. Marling's status as a Virgin artist didn't last long, since she released Alas I Cannot Swim in early 2008, which also came with a multimedia Songbox bundle. I Speak Because I Can, Marling's sophomore album, debuted at number three on the UK albums chart in 2010 and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. Marling undertook a working holiday tour of the United States in 2012, during which she performed a number of solo performances and unveiled her fourth album, Once I Was An Eagle, while in California. The album was released a year later, and it was her third Mercury Prize nomination. Upon the release of the album, Marling moved to Los Angeles in an attempt to settle down after relocating several times while releasing four albums in five years, each with accompanying tours. Early in 2013, plans for a fifth album were halted, but by 2014, Marling had finished new songs and returned to London to record the album. In the spring of 2015, the resultant Short Film was released. Marling distanced herself from her folk origins with her sixth studio album, much as she did on Short Movie with the addition of electric guitar. Blake Mills co-produced her sixth album, Semper Femina, which was released in early 2017 on Marling's own More Alarming label. The album has a deeper, smokier feel than her prior releases.
