Larry Baer Biography

Larry Baer, a fourth-generation San Franciscan, has established a nationwide reputation as one of professional sports' leading ideals. After leading the effort to gather a new ownership group and arrange the sale that kept the Giants in San Francisco,he joined the team as executive vice president in 1992. He is the limited partner in the ownership group, was named COO in May 1996, team president in October 2008, and Chief Executive Officer on January 1, 2012. The Giants won their second World Series title in three years in his first year as president and CEO. The Giants won their third World Series title in five years in 2014. As a president and CEO, Baer is the club's contact point for all Giants, Major League Baseball, and industry affairs. Baer is in control of the organization's overall day-to-day activities. The Giants designed and developed AT&T Park, the first privately-financed Major League ballpark, under his direction. AT&T Park has been largely viewed as one of the best ballparks ever built since its relaunch in 2000. The club has experienced a remarkable fan support, becoming one of only four teams to overcome three million in participation for eight consecutive years (2000-2007). The Giants presently have the longest dynamic home sellout streak in Major League Baseball, at 327 games. The Giants managed to sell out the 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 seasons and embraced more than 3.3 million fans every year, having the support of more than 30,000 full season ticket holders. The Giants have set the standard for partnership revenue in all of baseball, and the ballpark is still one of the most popular venues in the country for special events. AT&T Park was named Sports Facility of the Year by Sports Business Journal in 2008, and the Giants were named as the Professional Sports Organization of the Year by Sports Business Journal in 2011. Baer also plays a major role in the club's major business and baseball transactions as a key strategist and negotiator. This involves the signing of Barry Bonds in November 1992, the naming rights agreement with AT&T (then Pacific Bell) in 1996, and other strategic business collaborations. He was the driving force behind the Giants' partnership with Comcast to create a regional sports network for the Bay Area, and he led the effort to host the 2007 All-Star Game in San Francisco. Baer closely worked with the Giants Baseball department on strategic signings which will keep several main players, along with Buster Posey, Matt Cain, Madison Bumgarner, and Hunter Pence, in Giants uniforms for the coming years. Baer is also the Chairman and CEO of Giants Development Services, which is presently working to develop Mission Rock, a new, mixed-use urban neighbourhood on a 25-acre site all over McCovey Cove from AT&T Park. Once completed, Mission Rock will have more than eight acres of parks and recreational facilities, an Anchor Steam Brewery, 650-1,500 residential units, 1.3 - 1.7 million square feet of office space, a parking structure to utilise ballpark and Mission Rock patrons, and up to 250,000 square feet of stores, restaurants, as well as public infrastructure. The project is presently in the entitlement phase, with a 2016 innovative date planned. Baer decided to join the Giants as director of marketing after graduating from university of California with Phi Beta Kappa honours in 1980. He abandoned the Giants in 1983 to join Harvard Business School, and afterwards worked for Westinghouse Broadcast television in San Francisco and New York for 4 years. In December 1992, he decided to return to the Giants from CBS, Inc. in New York, in which he had worked as a special assistant to the network's chairman, Laurence Tisch. Through most of his period with the Giants, Baer has received numerous of excellence award. This involves the San Francisco Outstanding Leadership Award for civic leadership (1996), the Scopus Society of the American Friends of The Hebrew University's Sports Torch of Learning Award (1995), and the Anti-Defamation League's Torch of Liberty Award (2001). Baer was named Person of the Year by the San Francisco Boys and Girls Club in 2010, as well as Alumnus of the Year by Harvard Business School in 2012. In 2014, Baer was privileged with the University of California Berkeley's Excellence in Achievement award, and the American Jewish Committee's Civic Leadership Award. Baer is the president of Major League Baseball's Long-Term Strategic Planning Committee, and also a member of the Business and Media Board and the Legislative Affairs Committee. Baer sits on the board of KQED, Inc., the San Francisco Committee on Jobs, the Bay Area Council, Comcast Sports Net Bay Area, as well as the Boys and Girls Clubs of America Pacific Region Board of Trustees. Baer and his wife, Pam, are founder of the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation Campaign Committee in favour of the new hospital, which would be set to open at the end of 2015.
