In 2009, ESPN referred to Kolby Gray as “Dual threat” because of his running and passing skills on the field. He was ranked as the #28 high school quarterback in the whole nation. Gray was ready to enroll in the University of Pittsburg but transferred to Baylor University in his home town, Texas. Still active as a double threat on the field, his vocal ability and energized personality made him popular off the field especially in Nashville where his first album is being recorded. When a college player transfers to another Division I school, it’s a must that they sit out a season, this really helped Gray’s upcoming music career. Gray says “It would be very hard to be doing two-a-days and recording an album.” Debra Byrd who plays the role of head vocal coach for American Idol, has been working with the singing talent show since it’s inception. She journeyed to Nashville to work with Gray when he created Starstruck. “David Huff brought Kolby to me, and I immediately found that he was a quick study,” said Byrd, who has coached every Idol winner, including Scotty McCreary and Carrie Underwood. “I like to meet an artist where they are, and I found Kolby more than ready to record this project they had planned. I’ve really enjoyed watching him discover his own talent. And he is so talented.” Beyond the singing talent, the most important thing in Gray’s life is his large family. The 21 year old has five siblings. “I have seen so many young artists come along, and the thing that’s so very important, which Kolby has, is family support. That’s something he’s going to need to rely on as his career moves forward,” said Byrd after the recording sessions, which Gray’s uncle and father attended with two of his sisters. David Huff, his producer is excited about Gray, saying “He has a unique charisma that you don’t find all the time. He writes amazing songs. Five of the songs on the project are his, and he will grow as a performer and songwriter. I can’t wait to watch that, because I feel the sky is the limit with this one.” Huff goes on to say that he’s so thrilled about Gray’s talent and can’t wait to include brother Dann on the project. “Obviously, Dann is no stranger to talent, and he sees what I see in Kolby. He’ll bring something extra as the co-producer on a few songs.” Gray returned to his high school, Cypress Falls in Houston and took to the field as this time he performed to his fellow students. “I loved singing there. This school and these people have done so much for me. I really appreciate it, and going back on the field was just natural,” Gray said of his halftime performance at the team’s spring game. “I think they got to see a side of me they hadn’t seen before.”
