Kay Bailey Hutchison Biography

In 1994, Senator Hutchison was elected to a full six-year term.
She was elected to a second term in 2000, with more votes than any other statewide candidate in Texas history. She was re-elected by an overwhelming margin in 2006. Senator Hutchison held positions in the Senate leadership, first as Vice-Chairman of the Republican Conference and later as Chairman of the Republican Policy Committee. Senator Hutchison most previously served as the Ranking Member of the Senate Review panel on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, as well as the Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Equality, as well as Science. She has served on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee and as Chairman of the Military Construction Appropriations Subcommittee Senator Hutchison grew up in La Marque, Texas, and attended the University of Texas and the University of Texas Law School. She was elected to the Texas House of Representatives two times. She was elected Texas State Treasurer in 1990. She and several colleagues coauthored Nine and Counting: The Women of the Senate in June 2000, and her first best-selling book, American Heroines: The Spirited Women Who Shaped Our Country, was published in 2004. Leading Ladies: American Trailblazers, Senator Hutchison's second best-seller, was released in October 2007. Unflinching Courage, her next book, will be published in the spring of 2013.
