Overview
Katherine Anne Couric was born on January 7, 1957 in Arlington, Virginia, USA. Growing up in a family of educators she had early on set her sights on journalism, more specifically on television journalism following the footsteps of her father who was a news editor. She attended the University of Virginia and graduated with a degree in American Studies before starting her career at ABC News in Washington, D.C.. Her talent for storytelling and on screen presence saw her join CNN, where she further developed her skills as a reporter before moving to NBC in 1989 as a national correspondent. Katie emerged as co-anchor of the Today Show from 1991 to 2006, making her a household name with that warm demeanor and incisive interviews. She became the first solo female anchor of CBS Evening News in 2006 a position she held onto until 2011. In addition to her journalism career, she has started her own company, Katie Couric Media, which is a story telling company, and has also worked hard at advocating for cancer research ever since she lost her husband to colon cancer in 1998. Her documentary portfolio includes pieces on HPV awareness and gender equality, among other issues, for which she has been recognized widely. Some of Katie's affiliations involve working with companies like Stand Up To Cancer and the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance, which reflect her interest in health issues. Her life experience tells a story of a strong woman who has come a long way from being a reporter to a media pioneer and advocate. As a keynote speaker, she embarks on these experiences to engage with diverse audiences and provide lessons on communication and perseverance. Her work is especially meaningful to event planners, health educators, and anyone who has had to face and overcome adversity, making her a meaningful voice in the speaking circuit. This is because, for example, to a student planning an event to inspire their fellow professionals or a parent planning a event to help raise awareness for a cause, or to a patient or caregiver looking to gain insight and inspiration from someone who has been in similar situations, they want to hear from someone who can truly relate and connect with them. This is where Katie comes in.
