Dr. Katherine McKnight is an engaging speaker, devoted teacher, and published author. She began her career in teaching over 30 years ago as an English and social studies teacher in the Chicago Public Schools for middle and high school students. She is a regular consultant in schools and classrooms around the United States, as well as lecturing worldwide, in addition to presenting at professional development conferences. McKnight's 15-year academic tenure at National Louis University culminated with her appointment as Distinguished Professor of Research. She founded Engaging Learners, a learning firm based on her successful Literacy & Learning Center approach. In many failing schools, her work in educational leadership, literacy, and student skill development has resulted in exceptional academic performance. McKnight has earned several honors for her books and university teaching. She has written 20 books that promote instructional techniques that interest all students. The Teacher's Big Book of Graphic Organizers, which won the 2013 Teachers' Choice Award, and Literacy & Learning Centers for the Big Kids, grades 4-12, are two of her best-selling books. She co-authored The Second City Guide to Improv in the Classroom: Using Improvisation to Teach Skills and Boost Learning, which was published in 2008. During the COVID-19 epidemic, she established Morning Meeting webinars as a weekly venue for educators to engage in professional learning.
