Juwan Howard Biography

Juwan Howard is a former NBA center/forward who was named head coach of the Michigan Wolverines in 2019. Howard led the Wolverines to a 19-12 record in his first season as head coach, including upsets of No. 6 North Carolina and No. 8 Gonzaga. Howard attended Michigan University and was an All-American during the 1993-1994 season. He was a member of the 'Fab Five' recruiting class of 1991, which included Jalen Rose, Chris Weber, Jimmy King, and Ray Jackson, and led the team to consecutive NCAA championship games in 1992 and 1993. Howard was the fifth overall pick by the Washington Bullets/Wizards in the 1994 NBA Draft, and he went on to play for the Washington Bullets/Wizards (1994-2001), Dallas Mavericks (2001-2002, 2007-2008), Denver Nuggets (2002-2003, 2008), Orlando Magic (2003-2004), Houston Rockets (2004-2007), Charlotte Bobcats (2007-2008), Portland Trail Blazers (2009-2010), and Miami Heat (2010-2013). Howard won back-to-back NBA championships with the Heat in 2012 and 2013. After finishing his playing career, Howard joined the Miami Dolphins as an assistant coach, where he stayed from 2013 to 2019, before returning to Michigan. Since his college days at Michigan, Howard has been an active philanthropist. He frequently visited patients at the University of Michigan Health System Hospitals and founded the Juwan Howard Foundation to help underprivileged children participate in basketball activities. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on February 7, 1973.
