Joyce Epstein Biography

Joyce L. Epstein is a research professor of education and sociology at Johns Hopkins University as well as the board member of both the Center on School, Family, and Community Partnerships and the National Network of Partnership Schools. Her research is focused on how district and school leadership affects the quality of a school's initiatives on community and family involvement, as well as student outcomes. She is fascinated by the links between research, policy, and practise in all of her work. She has written over hundred articles about family and community involvement. School, Family, as well as Community Partnerships: Your Action Handbook, Third Edition is one of them (Corwin Press, 2009), which serves as a guide for the development of partnership programmes, and School, Family, and Community Partnerships: Preparing Educators and Improving Schools, Second Edition (Westview Press, 2011), a textbook for college courses for future teachers and principals. Multicultural Partnerships: Involve All Families and Family Reading Night are two co-authored books for practitioners (Taylor and Francis, 2012 and 2015, respectively). In 2009, she was given the name a fellow of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), and she obtained the AERA's Sociology of Education Special Interest Group's Elizabeth Cohen Award for Applied Research. She founded the National Partnership Network in 1995. which provides career development to school, district, and state leaders in order for them to establish, enhance, and sustain research-based programmes on family and community participation linked to student success in school.
