About Josh Lerner
Josh Lerner Biography
Josh Lerner is a dual appointment professor in the Finance and Entrepreneurial Management Units at Harvard Business School, where he is the Jacob H. Schiff Professor of Investment Banking. He earned a Special Divisional Major at Yale College that merged physics with the history of technology. He worked at the Brookings Institution, with a public-private task force in Chicago, and on Capitol Hill for several years on issues of technology innovation and public policy. He subsequently went on to Harvard's Economics Department for his Ph.D. studies. His study focuses on the structure of venture capital firms and their role in turning scientific breakthroughs into commercial goods. (Much of his work may be found in The Venture Capital Cycle, published by the MIT Press in 1999, and The Money of Invention, published by the Harvard Business School Press in 2001.) He also investigates the influence of intellectual property protection, particularly patents, on high-tech companies' competitive tactics. (These topics are addressed in his recent book, Innovation and Its Discontents, published by Princeton University Press.) He is a Research Associate in the Corporate Finance and Productivity Programs and serves as a co-editor of their publication Innovation Policy and the Economy. He founded, raised funds for, and organizes two groups at the National Bureau of Economic Research: the Entrepreneurship Working Group and the Innovation Policy and the Economy Group. He is also a Research Associate in the Corporate Finance and Productivity Programs and serves as a co-editor of their publication. In the 1993-94 academic year, he created private equity finance elective for second-year MBAs. In recent years, one of the most popular optional courses at Harvard Business School has been Venture Capital and Private Equity. (Venture Capital and Private Equity: A Casebook, John Wiley, 2000 and 2002, contains the course contents.) He also teaches executive education and doctorate courses on entrepreneurship and empirical techniques in corporate finance. He represents the School on the Harvard University Patent, Trademark, and Copyright Committee as well as the Provost's Technology Transfer Committee.
