Jonny Kim Biography

Jonny Kim is a NASA astronaut and a distinguished United States Navy Reserve lieutenant. Kim will become the first Korean-American to travel to space while still awaiting his flight assignment. Kim was born in 1984 in Los Angeles, California. Kim discovered his calling in helping people. He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 18 because he wanted to defend people who couldn't protect themselves. He discovered his interest in medicine while serving in the Iraq War as a Naval Special Warfare Medic, where he was impressed by the expertise and dedication of the doctors who saved his comrades' lives. Jonny got his commission in 2012 and graduated from the University of San Diego with a B.A. in mathematics. He obtained his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 2016 and subsequently finished his medical internship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, MA. Jonny applied to the NASA Astronaut Corps because he is passionate about science and wants to inspire future generations. He was chosen by NASA to be a Navy Lieutenant in the next Astronaut Candidate Class in 2017. In August 2017, Kim reported to duty to begin her two-year training as an astronaut candidate. Kim began technical responsibilities in the astronaut office after his training was completed, while he awaited a flying assignment. A Silver Star Medal, a Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V," a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat "V," a Special Operations Medical Association 2006 Naval Special Warfare Medic of the Year, a 2012 Tillman Scholar, and numerous additional service medals are among Kim's military decorations.
