Joneigh Khaldun Biography

Dr. Joneigh S. Khaldun serves as a renowned physician who combines expertise in public health with advocacy for health equity. The Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) welcomes Dr. Khaldun as their President and CEO since January 2025 to direct public health system improvements throughout America. Dr. Khaldun served as the Vice President and Chief Health Equity Officer at CVS Health before taking her current role where she implemented health equity strategies throughout every business segment of the organization.

Throughout her professional career Dr. Khaldun has focused on reducing health gaps while building stronger public health systems. Dr. Khaldun functioned as Chief Medical Executive and Chief Deputy Director for Health at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services where she managed public health together with Medicaid and behavioral health and aging services. She played a crucial role in Michigan's COVID-19 response by developing strategies to fight racial disparities and by heading the initiative to disclose COVID-19 case data based on racial categories.

As the leader of the Detroit Health Department she fought against opioid overdoses while working to decrease infant deaths and address lead poisoning in the community. Her control of the biggest hepatitis A outbreak in U.S. history received widespread public acknowledgment.

Dr. Khaldun maintains board certification in emergency medicine and performs part-time medical services at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Dr. Khaldun earned her M.D. degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania followed by her M.P.H. in Health Policy from George Washington University and her B.S. in Biology from the University of Michigan.

Dr. Khaldun received three notable awards that include the 40 Under 40 Leaders in Minority Health Award and the 40 Under 40 Leaders in Public Health Award and the George Washington University Monumental Alumni Award. The Detroit News granted her Michiganian of the Year title in 2021 and Crain’s Detroit named her among the 100 Most Influential Women in Michigan.
