John Ousterhout Biography

John Ousterhout graduated from Yale University with a bachelor's degree in physics in 1975 and a doctorate in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University in 1980. I was a Professor of Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1980 to 1994. The Magic layout editor and the Crystal timing analyzer were among the integrated circuit design tools I worked on, as were the Sprite network operating system, log-structured file systems, the Tcl scripting language, and the Tk toolkit. In 1994, I left Berkeley to pursue a long-held ambition of developing commercial software. I worked at Sun Microsystems Laboratories as a Distinguished Engineer from 1994 until 1998. I started Scriptics Corporation in 1998 to market Tcl programming tools, and I served as the company's CEO until 2000. Electric Cloud was started by me in 2002. I managed the development of a parallel build system (ElectricAccelerator) and a Web-based server for handling distributed activities such as nightly builds and automated testing at Electric Cloud until 2007. (ElectricCommander). In 2008, I returned to Stanford University's Department of Computer Science.
