John Hopkins Biography

On May 2, 2011, at Oulton Park, John Hopkins became the first American to win a British Superbike Series race. John Hopkins, a prominent World Superbike and MotoGP motorcycle racer who began his career racing dirt bikes in southern California as a child, is one of the sport's more colourful characters. Hopkins began his professional road racing career in 1999, and his first wins came the following year in the AMA 750 SuperSport class (Daytona, Georgia and Laguna Seca). Hopkins advanced to the AMA's new Formula Xtreme class in 2001, where he won two races (Georgia and Loudon, N.H.). His achievements in the United States did not go unnoticed in Europe, where motorcycle road racing is far more popular, and Hopkins signed his first MotoGP contract in 2002, finishing 15th overall in his rookie MotoGP season with the WCM/Yamaha team. Hopkins' MotoGP career transitioned from Yamahas to Suzukis as he gained experience and confidence, and he apparently worked with that company's factory programme for the next several years, culminating in his best season on the world's premier road racing stage in 2007. Hopkins won four podiums with the Rizla/Suzuki team that year (China, Czech Republic, San Marino, and Valencia) and finished a career-best fourth overall in MotoGP. Hopkins joined the Monster Energy/Kawasaki MotoGP team in 2008, but was injured in a crash at the Dutch TT in Assen (Netherlands) and never fully recovered. With Monster Energy pulling out of MotoGP team sponsorship, Hopkins joined the Stiggy Racing Honda team on the World Superbike Championship circuit in 2009, and he still wears the M-claw logo on his helmet. Hopkins will be racing for the Crescent Suzuki team in the British Superbike Series in 2011.
