Liu, a Canadian-born physician, has been with MSF since 1996, when she was assigned to care for Malian refugees in Mauritania. She has since participated in over 20 missions on 4 continents, assisting victims of the Indonesian tsunami and Haitian earthquake, as well as refugees and survivors of sexual violence in Somalia, Congo, and Sudan's Darfur region, to name a few. But Liu's job became even more difficult in October 2013, when she was named the group's international president, just two months before the first West African patients were diagnosed with Ebola, kicking off what would become the deadliest and most widespread outbreak of the dread disease to date. Liu and MSF didn't waste any time. She was a key figure in the organization's quick and aggressive response to the virus, establishing field hospitals in the heart of the outbreak and pressuring African leaders and public health officials around the world to do more. The pressure was effective. This contagion has been contained, at least for the time being.
