Jo Ann Jenkins Biography

AARP's executive vice president and the chief operating officer is Jo Ann Jenkins. She supervises the creation of an enterprise-wide strategy that involves establishing and enabling operational goals as well as optimizing AARP's purpose as chief operating officer. She is in charge of ten major AARP initiatives, including strategic planning, administration, and coordination of AARP's numerous member-facing distribution channels, technology, and digital operations, and innovation strategy creation. Jenkins joined the AARP Foundation in 2010 as a proven entrepreneur and has since overseen the organization's far-reaching development and social impact projects. Over the course of two years, her leadership expanded the foundation's total donor base by 90%. Jenkins is well-known in the charity, public, and private sectors for his considerable leadership, management, planning, and business expertise. She joined the AARP Foundation after serving as a chief operating officer and second in command at the Library of Congress since 2007, where she was in charge of the library's day-to-day operations, 4,000-person workforce, and $600 million budget. She conceived and directed two of the Library of Congress' most recognized programs, the National Book Festival and the Library of Congress Experience, the largest and most complicated program in the institution's 210-year existence, during her 15-year career there. She received the 11th Annual Women in IT Award from the technology sector in May 2010 for her innovative leadership on the Library of Congress Experience. She has also received the Distinguished Service Award from the Library of Congress. She was the director of the USDA's Office of Advocacy and Enterprise from 1990 until 1993. She started working for the federal government in May 1981 at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, then moved to the United States Department of Transportation in 1987. She joined the AARP Services Board of Directors in 2004 and became its chair in 2008, serving until May 2010. She is on the board of directors of Living Cities, a cutting-edge philanthropic collaboration comprised of 22 of the world's most powerful foundations and financial organizations. She was a delegate and founding member of the United States-Japan Leadership Program and a Leadership America graduate in 1999. She has been named a Malcolm Baldrige Fellow (2013). She graduated from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala., with a bachelor's degree in arts. She graduated from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business's Executive Program in 1998.
