Jim Weinstein Biography

Dr. James N. Weinstein has led Microsoft Healthcare as Senior Vice President since July 2018. He drives global strategy and innovation while leading major health systems including NHS, CVS, Kaiser, Johns Hopkins, and Centene to advance healthcare transformation. Through his leadership at Microsoft Dr. Weinstein works to create population health through technology while fighting health disparities caused by racial and socioeconomic factors.

Dr. Weinstein led Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health as CEO and President before joining Microsoft where he managed a $2.5 billion healthcare system that served two million patients. He created a value-based operating system at Dartmouth that concentrated on quality and affordability and population results which resulted in a top 1% position in healthcare quality rankings. He directed The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice before becoming its president and led the organization to secure funding for PROMs and SPORT through a $30 million NIH grant.

Dr. Weinstein established himself as a leading expert in research and surgery through 330 peer-reviewed publications and received more than $70 million from federal grants while holding the Peggy Y. Thomson Chair at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine. His leadership established the first Center for Shared Decision Making in 1999 while he directed the National High Value Healthcare Collaborative to achieve significant reductions in in-hospital sepsis deaths.

His health policy influence at the national level includes two significant appointments: President Obama selected him for the VA's Special Medical Advisory Group and he led the National Academy of Medicine’s committee on community health equity. He maintains board member roles at the Max Planck Florida Institute, Intermountain Health, ARMI, Centene’s Equity Advisory Board and Charles Drew University Medical School.

As a well-known public speaker Dr. Weinstein has written Unraveled: Prescriptions to Repair a Broken Health Care System (2016) and maintains ongoing contact with Congress and federal agencies and World Economic Forum global forums.
