Jim Beatty Biography

Beatty earned his bachelor's degree in 1957 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where his best mile time was a modest 4:06. In 1955 and 1957, he was an All-American in the two miles, and in 1956, he was an All-American in the 5,000 meters. In 1955 and 1956, Beatty was the Atlantic Coast Conference mile champion. Beatty relocated to California in 1960 to train with Mihaly Igoli, and he joined the Los Angeles Track Club in 1961. In 1962, Beatty set eleven American and three world records, making him the first American to hold records in the 1,500 meters, 3,000 meters, 5,000 meters, one, and three-mile races at the same time. He received the James E. Sullivan Award as the nation's finest amateur athlete in 1962 for his exceptional achievement.
