Jill Tiefenthaler Biography

Dr. Jill Tiefenthaler, the National Geographic Society's chief executive officer, is in charge of planning and carrying out the organization's mission-driven activities and programmatic agenda. She guides their network of worldwide Explorers—scientists, creators, teachers, and storytellers—in their quest to enlighten and safeguard the wonders of our planet. Tiefenthaler is a member of both the National Geographic Partners board and the Society's board of trustees. Tiefenthaler served as Colorado College's president for nine years before joining the National Geographic Society. She assisted in establishing the school's new direction, carried out the largest fundraising effort in its history, and created and put into action a comprehensive strategic plan that grew and nurtured an active, interconnected academic community. She created the college's campus master plan, carried out a partnership to incorporate the renowned Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, and oversaw the college's efforts to become carbon neutral. She also led the school community in an external study of racism at the institution that resulted in an Antiracism Implementation Plan, which significantly increased diversity among the staff and student body. Before becoming the president of Colorado College, Tiefenthaler served as provost at Wake Forest University, where she overhauled the admissions procedure to include an SAT-optional policy, combined the undergraduate and graduate business schools, founded the Institute for Public Engagement and The Humanities Institute, and put into action the "Living Our Values" initiative to improve residential life and campus vibrancy. Before taking on various administrative positions, including consultant to the president, associate dean of the faculty, founding director of the Upstate Institute, and chair of the department of economics, Tiefenthaler began her academic career as a full professor of economics at Colgate University. Earlier enrolling at Saint Mary's College in Notre Dame, IN, Tiefenthaler, who is originally from Iowa, worked for her family's popcorn company while growing up on a farm and before. She graduated from Duke University with an M.A. and a Ph.D. in economics.
