Jill Nelson Biography

Jill Nelson's work has appeared in numerous publications including The New York Times Essence The Nation Ms. The Chicago Tribune and The Village Voice. Nelson was a staff writer for The Washington Post Magazine during its first years of existence and was named Washington DC Journalist of the Year for her work there. Today she freelances and lectures widely in addition to writing a bi-weekly column for MSNBC.com and NiaOnline.com. She also writes monthly columns for the Op Ed page of USA Today and is a Professor of Journalism at the City College of New York. Nelson has written the best-selling memoir Volunteer Slavery: My Authentic Negro Experience which won an American Book Award. Most recently she authored Straight No Chaser: How I Became A Grown-Up Black Woman and edited Police Brutality: An Anthology. Her first novel Sexual Healing was published in June 2003 and she is currently working on a memoir about Martha's Vineyard to be published in 2004.
