Jerome M. Adams Biography

Dr. Jerome Adams is the United States' 20th Surgeon General. As the “Nation's Doctor,” his purpose is to improve the health of the American people. During his tenure, he has launched a number of programs aimed at addressing critical health concerns such as the opioid crisis, oral health, and the linkages between community health and both economic success and national security. Dr. Adams has the rank of Vice Admiral in the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps as Surgeon General. In this role, he is in charge of the operations of over 6,500 uniformed health officers who serve in almost 800 sites across the world, promoting, protecting, and improving our nation's health and safety. Dr. Adams has established many programs to address our nation's most critical health challenges, including the opioid crisis, oral health, and the linkages between community health and both economic development and national security during his term as Surgeon General. Dr. Adams released the first Surgeon General's Advisory in thirteen years in response to the opioid epidemic, asking more Americans to carry naloxone, an FDA-approved medicine that may reverse the symptoms of an opioid overdose. Dr. Adams also published Facing Addiction in America: The Surgeon General's Spotlight on Opioids, as well as a digital postcard urging a cultural transformation in how Americans think about, discuss, and respond to the opioid problem. His Surgeon General's postcard suggests strategies to prevent and treat opioid addiction, as well as to encourage recovery. Dr. Adams is also committed to fostering a culture of health and prevention across all sectors. Dr. Adams will gather the available information and best practices demonstrating the link between private sector investments and public policies that promote healthy communities, as well as subsequent measurements of business and community prosperity, as part of those efforts. He will publish a report to disseminate the findings, stimulate further study, and give tools and resources for effective, efficient community health investments that provide outcomes. Dr. Adams earned bachelor's degrees in biochemistry and psychology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, as well as a master's degree in public health from the University of California, Berkeley, and a medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. He has served as president of the American Medical Association, the Indiana State Medical Association, and the Indiana Society of Anesthesiologists, among others. Dr. Adams is also a former Indiana Health Commissioner, where he oversaw the state's responses to Ebola, Zika, and the biggest HIV outbreak in US history linked to injectable drug use. Dr. Adams has committed to use research to lead and to promote locally-led solutions to the nation's most severe health challenges.
