Jennifer King, the former head coach of the Johnson & Wales University women's basketball team in Charlotte, served as a coaching intern for Rivera with the Carolina Panthers the previous two summers and is now an assistant coach on the Dartmouth College football team. Coach Ron Rivera of the Washington Redskins is in the process of hiring King, who would be the NFL's first full-time female African American coach. King, who attended Guilford College in North Carolina and played softball and basketball, also competed in the Women's Football Alliance, earning a national title with the New York Sharks. In 2018, she guided Johnson & Wales to a U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association national title as a basketball coach. She told the Carolina Panthers' website that she met Rivera at a seminar for women to build these sorts of contacts with the league during that year's Pro Bowl. He asked her to talk to the squad and then hired her as a coaching intern. She worked with the Panthers' wide receivers in 2018. She aided running backs coach Jake Peetz last summer, even taking over the group for a brief period when Peetz's wife had a baby. King claimed she is friends with San Francisco 49ers assistant Katie Sowers, who became the Super Bowl's first full-time female assistant coach last week.
